Immerse yourself into the fabulous world of Angels Costumes under the expert guidance of tutors from Britain’s oldest embroidery atelier, you will master the art of embellishment that once adorned the garments of Hollywood starlets and mid-century fashion icons. Focus on the intricate techniques of beading, where you’ll learn how to create stunning textures and dimension through the application of various beads, sequins, and other decorative elements. Drawing inspiration from the sophisticated silhouettes and intricate details of 1950s garments, you’ll explore the interplay of light and shadow, capturing the essence of this glamorous era.
This immersive course (with a limited number of places) offers a rare opportunity to master traditional couture beading techniques and apply them to your own timeless creations, evoking the allure and refinement of a bygone time.
It also includes an exclusive Tour of Angels Costumes. A one-of-a-kind experience, the Behind the Seams Tour showcases Angels extensive costume collection, which spans 8 miles worth of rails, and over 1 million items. Participants will also receive a copy of Angels book Behind The Seams.

About Angels Costumes

About Hand & Lock
Hand & Lock are London’s premier embroidery house and oldest embellishment atelier in Britain, providing embellishment services to the Royal Family, top European design houses, the military, Savile Row and members of the public. Founded in 1767, they have over 250 years’ experience embellishing, embroidering and monogramming.
Embroidery Tutors:
Lucy Martin Trained at the Royal School of Needlework with a First Class Honours Degree in Hand Embroidery, Lucy Martin is a bespoke hand embroiderer based in London and has created artworks for a huge range of clients from fashion houses to royalty. Lucy grew up in the idyllic countryside of the Peak District. She has been stitching as long as she can remember, from helping her mum make wedding dresses to now working on pieces for companies such as Alexander McQueen, Burberry and Jasper Conran. Lucy has also had the honour of working with some incredible clients including Beyonce, Brian May and the Royal Family. Her exceptional hand embroidery skills have won her a series of internationally acclaimed awards, and she is now responsible for the success and development of both the Hand & Lock School and its students.
Freya Stanford Freya Stanford grew up stitching, learning from her mum at a young age, she has always had a passion for the art. In 2023 she graduated from the Royal School of Needlework with a First Class Honour degree in Hand Embroidery where she learned skills including Goldwork, Tambour Beading and Silk Shading embroidery amongst many more. Freya has had the privilege of working for fashion houses such as Alexander McQueen and Erdem as well as working on costumes for films such as Wicked. Now, as part of the Hand & Lock team, she is sharing her embroidery skills with the lovely Hand & Lock students. Freya has an eye for detail and loves experimenting with embroidery, combining different techniques to create something new. Working alongside Lucy (Head of Education), the Hand & Lock education team strive to keep the art of embroidery alive through contemporary classes and colourful designs.

- The course will run from 10am to 4pm on all three days.

- Car parking is available on site if required
- Public Transport – Hendon Thameslink – 5 minute walk. Hendon Central Tube Station (Northern Line) 15-20 minute walk or a 10 minute bus ride routes 83, 183 or SL10
- Lunch Arrangements – participants are advised to bring a packed lunch (microwave/fridge available on site) although there are a few café’s fairly close by. One hour will be scheduled for lunch.
- Hot drinks will be provided
- Angels & Hand & Lock will provide all the materials and tools that you need but you are welcome to bring anything that you feel comfortable using yourself.

METHOD OF CONFIRMATION
Once your registration for a course has been successfully processed, you will receive an email confirming your space, name of the course, course timing, and location of class within three working days
CANCELLATIONS REFUNDS AND TRANSFER POLICY
Angels Costumes are generally not able to offer refunds on courses although if we are able to sell the place in a timely fashion we will do so and at our discretion will offer a refund minus a small service fee.
Angels Costumes reserve the right to cancel a course at any time, without incurring any additional liability to the student. In such circumstances, we will offer alternative dates where possible or a full refund.
LIMITATION OF LIABILITY
Angels Costumes cannot be responsible or liable for loss or damage of property, obligations derived from travel arrangements, or disruption of program due to circumstances beyond the control of Angels Costumes.
