Angels supports young people through Creative Apprenticeships

Angels are dedicated to the development and training of young people entering the costume industry, offering both work experience placements and graduate internships, as well as its newly founded apprenticeship scheme.

We have a long history of encouraging young talent, and is already perceived to be one of the major training grounds for professional, efficient and reliable costume and wardrobe staff. Countless numbers of freelance costumiers and designers such as Jacqueline Durran (Anna Karenina)Julian Day (Salmon Fishing in the Yemen) and Alexander McQueen have begun their careers at Angels, and it is safe to say that employers feel reassured when they see the Angels name on a candidate’s CV.

Angels are now in the third year of offering Creative Apprenticeships in association with Amersham & Wickham College. This paid, work-based training programme offers candidates a direct route into a career in wardrobe, with an unprecedented level of guidance and training from established industry experts.

We will be recruiting for our next intake later this year, please continue to check this page for further updates. If you want to register your interest email

Course Details:

Combining classroom training in the work place with the practical aspects of costume history, maintenance and fitting, an Angels apprenticeship provides trainees with all the necessary skills for working in the costume world of film, theatre and television. In association with Amersham & Wickham College, candidates complete Costume & Wardrobe Level 3 Certificates in Theatre Support, Costume & Wardrobe plus a EDI L3 Certificate in Creative and Cultural Practice.

There are currently four apprentices studying Level 3, and we have recently employed our three 2012/2013 graduates, demonstrating the seriousness with which Angels approaches the recruitment and training of these young people. In the future, it is hoped that this scheme will be the main recruitment pathway at Angels – something that was recently acknowledged at the Creative Apprentice Employer of the Year Awards 2013, where Angels was Highly Commended for its recruitment practice and were highly commended in the Regional National Apprenticeship Awards in the Newcomer Category. In addition we have been included in City & Guilds Top 100 Apprenticeships Employers List.

Quotes from our current apprentices:

“I have always been a practical learner and a course that I can do whilst learning on the job sounded perfect for me. It was also great to be able to learn and work from the bottom up in the industry I want to be in, rather than having to apply after 3 years at University.”
Charlotte Ward – Graduate and Employee

“As apprentices I feel we can bring a new generation of views to an already well respected company I think the two work well hand in hand together. I think it’s a really lovely mix of extremely wise senior Costumiers with us new apprentices. It’s a really lovely combination.”
Charlotte Benson – Level 3 Apprentice
